- Designed in 1998 by Brian Willson of Three Islands Press, Castine owes the look of its distinctive letterforms to three centuries-old headstones in the Castine Town Cemetery of Castine, Maine. The typeface is essentially twice removed from the source monuments: from headstones, to rubbings, to digital outlines. Missing and additional glyphs were modeled after existing letterforms—and a series of death’s head ornaments stands witness to one old stonecarver’s original winged skull.
