Missaali is a black letter Textura font that is based on the incunabula Missale Aboense printed by Bartholomew Ghotan in 1488. Its intended use is either as a display font or to emulate late medieval Gothic textualis formata manuscripts. It uses a 15th century set of symbols, which means that it has many symbols that have fallen out of use over the centuries but lacks many that are nowadays taken for granted (like Arabic numbers). Missaali should be used with the 'contextual alternate' (calt) and 'standard ligatures' (liga) features turned on since they are used to implement the characteristic properties of the Textura script: fusions of certain pairs of letters and the alternate forms of 'r' and 's'.The font has also a large number of other OpenType features that implement of incunabula and scribal conventions. The features are easiest to access with XeLaTeX but most of them are available also under other systems that support OpenType features. Many features have two different names so that they can be used in systems that support only a limited set of OpenType tags.
